There are really no right or wrong choices in choosing your Zombie defense firearms. While some choices are obviously better than others, it still comes down to personal preference and your budget. The most important thing is to practice, practice, practice.
Below are my choices after several years of trying various firearms to find what just felt right to me...
FIRST, a couple thoughts for the new firearm owner thinking "OK, where do I start?" ...
Well, it depends on you. Are you a noob with no other firearms? Are you planning on getting your Conceal Carry permit? Do you just want one gun ever? Lots of variables. I'll just make a quick dash through a few WWID suggestions...
If I were a total noob, but planned on future purchases, I'd start with a pistol (assuming you are going to carry it.) A pistol is the weakest firearm, but a high powered rifle in your closet at home won't do shit for you when you're on vacation or the mall.
If you don't plan on carrying a firearm, start with a shotgun or rifle. Pros with both, cons with both. If money is tight, shotguns are cheaper.
If you never, ever plan on "going armed", I don't see the point of buying a handgun. Honestly I don't. "But I need a sidearm for when my gat runs dry!" Why? 1 more spare mag on your hip in lieu of that 1911 will serve you far better. Rifle > pistol, 30 > 7.
"But, but my rifle may jam." Learn to clear it. Clearing most jams takes less time that dropping your rifle and drawing a handgun.
"But what if my rifle breaks?" Well, then screw you. That's what. Do you buy cheap motorcycle helmets too? You shoulda bought a better rifle...

BCM Rifles
If you've stumbled upon this website, lemme give you the best advice I can when it comes to firearms:
"Cry once."
Get a BCM or a Spike's Tactical. DO NOT listen to the "internet forum experts" that tell you 'Get a RRA! They are badass!' or 'Get a S&W MP! I've shot 20 rounds in mine! And it's perfect.' Just don't.
Just do a little research, just a little, and you'll figure it out. I wouldn't tell you which to get (BCM or Spike's) I just prefer BCM because of who they are, what they stand for, and their customer service.

Glocks
More web wars have been started over handguns than arguments in barber shops over Ford vs. Chevy.
Just lemme drop you a couple clues:
1. You are not an Operator (unless you actually are.) Leave the 1911's to the guys that shoot thousands of rounds a year. Don't let your great uncle convince you to spend $800 on one and another $200 upgrading it (before you even shoot it.)
B. DO NOT let the old internet expert on your forum convince you "since yur a noob you need a revolver." No. If you lack the hand strength to load a mag or rack a slide, there are mag loaders and tricks to racking a slide. Google it. If you need a revolver because you ain'ts smart enough to operate an auto...just stay away from guns. You'll just hurt yourself.

Knives
Never does the saying "You get what you pay for" hold truer. But...if you're really on budget, Gerber Paraframes are a great choice.
There are lots of great knives out there. Buck, Case, Kabar, etc. I like ESEE knives. I just like the feel. Get a quality knife, take care of it and it'll last you a lifetime. Don't run to the local flea market and get a Chinamen Rambo knife. Thank me later.
And learn how to sharpen it.

Bug In defense
Whatever you pick, shotgun, handgun, or rifle, KNOW THE LAYOUT OF YOUR HOUSE. Know where the bedrooms are. Know where the couch is. Know if you shoot through a front window it may go across the street into your neighbor's bedroom.
Know your house. The dude breaking in doesn't. Leave the lights off and use that against him.

Whatever weapons you choose, I'd suggest getting the most popular calibers to your area. And stocking ammunition in a 4:1:1 ratio. 4 parts rifle to 1 part handgun to 1 part shotgun ammo. A handgun is a sidearm. A shotgun is close range weapon. When the SHTF, the rifle is king.
Learn how to properly clean and maintain your weapons. And practice, practice, practice. Then practice some more.

The most important weapon you have...
... is your brain. Learn to use it. A little common sense goes a long way.
Remember the Rules of Three:
You can live 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water,
3 weeks without food and 3 months without hope.
Did I mention you really need to familiarize yourself with your choice of firearms? If it's nothing more than dry-firing or cleaning...practice, practice, practice.
